Is there any down side to using HTML in a string resource?
Say for example if you wanted to use the <b> around a word.
Seems to work fine when testing it.

No. Because there are plenty of out-of-box examples with embedded HTML. Therefore, it was meant to be.

Using MS 9.2.0.0 with the following customisations:
Lightbox/Fancybox enlarged images;
Auto-suggest searchbox;
Extra product information shown only to our IP Address (such as supplier info, costs, etc.);
Failed transactions emailed via trigger;
Custom app to show basket contents when customer online;
Orders pushed through to accounting systems.
All the above without source!
I think it is unavoidable in certain circumstances. We use it quite often also.
