    Default ML8 - menu / <item Text="(!menu.Categories0!)" LookId="VertTopItemLook" />

    I need to modify the top menu for a more complex layout. I need to display sections and subcategories.

    I'd like to know where (!menu.Categories0!) is defined so I can use this code to make my customizations. Thank you.

    Note: This works only for the versions 8 and earlier.

    The files are located under the App_Templates\Skin_x folder where x is the skin that is currently applied to your site. There are two files for horizontal and vertical menus. menuData.xml is for horizontal and vertMenuData.xml is for the vertical menu. Here you will find the lines you are looking for.
