Thread: Migration from OsCommerce... Need advice!

I currently have an established website (www.virginblak.com) which was made with OsCommerce.

Well, we are trying to find a better solution at the moment which offers more features with less bugs, and we are considering aspdotnet as our new solution.


Two questions to ask:

1. Does aspdotnet offer features noted below?

2. Is there a migration tool available? I have absolutely no programming knowledge. Does aspdotnet offer migration service? If not, is this something that a programmer can do?

We will need to migrate all the website designs, customer data, previous sales data, products data, etc.



Some of the main features we need:


- Good support from solution company either by phone or email

- Able to integrate with QuickBooks (or any other accounting software)

- SEO friendly

- Fully customizable store front design

- Country specific shipping options (customner from xx country can only use xx shipping method. We offer two shipping options)

- Gift certificate

- Able to send revised invoices to customers

- Promotion tools: ex) able to give Free Shipping on purchases over xx amount, Automatically calculates xx% discount for purchases over xx amount.

- VIP customer point system: VIP cusomter gets back 2% store credit on their purchases.

We can support OScommerce URLs out-of-box as well (though the routing engine and settings in the web.config) so you can keep any SEO you've gained. SEO has been taken to a new level with Version 9 allowing for the change in URL formats for products, topics, entities with simple changes within the web.config. URL extensions can be changed from .html, .aspx, etc if further desired.

We also support the addition of meta info. Every page in the AspDotNetStorefront software can be given a title, meta description, and keywords. Product, entity, and topic pages can each be given unique information, while pages like the shopping cart, the home page, and checkout pages share the same (customizable) information. We also support Goolgle Analytics. The storefront software allows store admins to easily integrate with Google's Analytics service. These features help you find out what keywords attract your most desirable prospects, what advertising copy pulled the most responses, and what landing pages and content make the most money for you (Google.com).

Lastly we do support feeds. Feeds are data formats used for providing third-party websites with frequently updated content from your store site. The feeds that are generated in the admin site are posted on third party websites such as googlebase, shopzilla and amazon.com. Having efficient feeds on these third-party sites increases the awareness of users. This will help direct more traffic and increase promotion for your site and its products. The software comes preloaded with a feed to GoogleBase (see below), and new feeds can be added with the 'Add Feed' button.

- Fully customizable store front design
Through the use of MasterPages that is a .NET standard of skinning and replaces AspDotNetStorefront’s proprietary skinning engine. Utilized by many .NET developers, skinning creation will be easier allowing for more extensive use of AJAX. AspDotNetStorefront proprietary tokens will continue to work.

Also with some customizations you will need to purchase the source code which is available at $995.

- Country specific shipping options (customer from xx country can only use xx shipping method. We offer two shipping options)

- Gift certificate
We are able to handle Gift certificates through the use of "Gift Cards" option
Email gift certificates are the only type that is sent to the recipient automatically (once payment is collected). The email is generated by notification.emailgiftcard.xml.config, which can be customized. By default, customers receive a simple text notification of the receipt with a link to the store and the gift card serial number (which is automatically generated).

Yes, we do handle those promotion tools through the use of "Coupons"

You can also achieve this by creating customer levels, to get free shipping.

To do something like this would require some customization of "Micro Pay"

You can also Import Products trough Excel.

I would recommend contacting our DevNet Partners if you need help migrating your old info to the new site, as it is a bit more complicated.

Your website design will have to be converted to a MasterPages skin.
