Default Categories empty after Excel import

I have a client that wants to switch to AspDotNetStorefront so I installed the demo version to get a feel for what it would be like to work with. I imported all of his items using Excel and the import was successful--all of the items and categories show up on the admin page, but on the store page all of the categories are empty except the 2 test categories I initially created on the admin page. I've checked the date issue and even set the start date for an item to yesterday but that didn't help. Everything is checked as published and all of the required fields are filled in, everything has a category mapping and an inventory qty. I can't see any difference between the items I created and the ones I imported. Is this a limitation with the demo version or a problem? The client can hardly stand it he wants it so bad, but I don't feel like creating all of this stuff from scratch.
