Default tmp_xxx.jpg files in images/product folders - safe to delete?

I just noticed I have hundreds of "tmp_" files in my images/product/large folder. They appear to be the same filename of other images in the folder but with the "tmp_" prefix tacked on. What is causing this and are these files safe to delete?

Those are created during the image resizing when you upload an image. Generally they're immediately cleared out, it sounds like something's off with your permissions so the .NET user account can't delete files. There shouldn't be any problem with deleting those.
