Default Best way to apply taxes?

    Hi Everyone,
I am wondering what is the best way to apply taxes to my site. It seems that every county has a different tax % so im not sure where to even start with this. Please let me know how others have done this or what the best practice for this is. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Randy

    Default Setting Up Taxes

    Hi Randy,

There are numerous ways of flexibly handling taxes through AspDotNetStoreFront. You could configure taxes by country, by state, by product class and even by zip code.

Please review and follow the instructions on the links below accordingly.

By Country, by States or by Zip Code

    By Product Tax Class

    Thanks Joe,
I understand where to add the taxes, Im just not sure the best way to do it. Im thinking the best way is to do it by states, since that will give a close number for each county (probably) but does anyone know of a zip code database with tax % numbers that I could implement.

    Thanks

    Hi Randy,

I would recommend talking with your CPA. Many states have seperate tax by county, but tax is charges based on the city you are located in. Again, we aren't tax experts and can't give tax advice, so your accountant would be the best source of information.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Thanks Dan, I will look into it more.
Also I set the pa sales tax and it works in the cart - charging an extra $207. But I am getting "will quote" for taxes in the receipt emails.

    Subtotal: $3,456.09
    Shipping (Ground): $345.61
    Tax: Will Quote
    Total: Will Quote

Why isnt it showing the amount that was charged in the cart?

Sounds like you are using "Request quote" as your payment method

Yes, that's exactly what the Request Quote does.

    Default Sales tax companies

I talked to a company that has an API for ASPDNS sales tax. I forget their name right now, but it cost about 40 cents a lookup if you are small - say under $5 mill in sales. It gets down to about 4 cents for Amazon.
They have to do a position lookup for every address. Maybe the states will start using zip codes and life will be better.

    Default Sales Tax Data Vendor

I purchase tables with frequent updates fron Tax Data Systems and import to tax by zip code for the states in which we have nexus. Unfortunately, Storefront is very weak, to put it nicely, on sales taxes and reporting, needing a few more fields added to the tax tables for accurate reporting by tax district code, state, county and city.

We've built an importer in admin to easily apply updates as received and the data is relatively inexpensive, depending upon the level of data you require.
